DIAGNOSTIC ERRORS CARRY A STEEP PRICE

Michael Cohen, MD understands all too well the consequences that come from diagnostic errors after being treated for acid reflux only to find out two years later that he had lung cancer along.

Dr. Cohen is part of the Committee on Diagnostic Error in Medicine and is one of the authors in a recent Institute of Medicine Report, “Improving Diagnosis in Health Care” where an emphasis is made on the importance of provider-patient communications for improving the quality and safety of health care.    

According to the report, “most people will experience at least one diagnostic error in their lifetime, sometimes with devastating consequences.”
